Composition Shingles Are Organic Mat Type

Composition shingles are organic mat type. Fiberglass shingles feature a mat that is made of wet fiberglass held together with a urea formaldehyde resin. Due to the absence of paper fiberglass shingles are more fire resistant than organic asphalt shingles. Organic shingles have not been manufactured since about 2008 but many were installed over the years and you ll continue to see them for a while. Fiberglass shingles are made of a woven fiberglass base mat covered with a waterproof asphalt coating and topped with ceramic granules that shield the shingles from harmful uv rays.

The mat asphalt and granules act together to form a durable flexible and waterproof assembly. Organic roof shingles have mostly gone by the wayside over time due to their short lifespan. The mat then receives a coating of asphalt blended with a variety of mineral fillers to make the shingles waterproof. Organic shingles are made with a base mat of organic materials such as waste paper cellulose wood fiber or other materials.

They are more resistant to tearing during installation than fiberglass mat shingles. Organic shingles were the first type of asphalt shingle offered but are much less commonly used today. Cellulose used for shingle mat comes from wood chips and recycled cardboard rags and paper. Because of the composition of the fiberglass mat the shingles don t need as much asphalt to give them durability and strength.

In the past shingles were also manufactured using mats made of cellulose based materials and these are called organic shingles. Cellulose mat also called felt is typically thicker than fiberglass mat. The mat is soaked with asphalt filled with mineral fillers which makes it waterproof. Because of the composition of the fiberglass mat less asphalt is needed to give the shingles their durability and strength making them a lighter and more environmentally friendly option than traditional organic mat asphalt shingles.

While traditional organic mat shingles are extremely heavy and durable fiberglass shingles are a bit lighter. Organic shingles on the other hand are thicker due to a strong layer of cellulose that makes up the base. Mat the mat provides the reinforcement that gives shingles the strength to help resist splitting. Asphalt roof shingles are available as the common 3 tab shingle or the more durable architectural roof shingle.

Composition shingles are highly durable. The fiberglass mat used in today s asphalt shingles used to be an organic felt mat consisting of wool cellulose wood fiber or waste paper. They have a base of organic felt which is saturated in liquid asphalt. This is saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof then a top coating of adhesive asphalt is applied covered with solid granules.

Fiberglass shingles do contain some asphalt but less of it than organic shingles. Unlike asphalt shingles which have a much shorter lifespan usually between 5 and 20 years at maximum composition roofs will last up to 50 years. Not as long lasting as fiberglass. They re made out of a woven fiberglass base mat then covered with a waterproof asphalt coating and topped with uv shielding ceramic granules.
